Biography
Sal Gilbertie

To Sal Gilbertie, herbs are more than the heart of a successful business. On the forefront of the herb movement for over 35 years, Sal is renowned as one of the country’s leading experts in herbs.  He continues his mission to spread the food news about herbs throughout America.

From their modest beginning as a cut-flower business established in 1922, Gilbertie’s Herb Gardens has become the largest herb plant grower in the country, shipping hundreds of varieties to over 800 garden centers and herb farms across the East Coast.  A division of the company, Gilbertie’s Natural Fragrances, was established in 1983, and features more than 55 natural fragrances developed by Gilbertie, inspired by the fragrance and beauty of the gardens and growing fields.  In addition to natural fragrant oils, the collection includes dozens of potpourris, candles, room sprays and other natural home fragrance items available at gift shops and stores throughout the country.

“A sprig of lavender can scent a room.  Herbs can, and should, grace everyone’s life,” says Gilbertie.  “Herbs are so easy to grow and give so much in return—beauty, flavor, fragrance—fascinating and endless uses.”

Gilbertie’s commitment and dedication to herbs has inspired him to write five books:  Kitchen Herbs; Herb Gardening at its Best; Home Gardening at its Best; Herbs for the Holidays; and The Herbal Palate Cookbook.

He is a frequent lecturer on herb gardening and hosts year-round decorating workshops held at the Westport retail shop.  Gilbertie has appeared on numerous national radio and television programs, most recently Martha Stewart Living, “Home Matters” on the Discovery Channel and the “Home Show” on the Lifetime Channel.

“The authors of the Bible, the ancient Romans, the Indian shamans, and Shakespeare (who never stopped praising herbs) all knew what we are now appreciating and rediscovering.  Herbs make one’s life fuller,” he says.

Sal Gilbertie resides in Easton with his wife Marie who is also in the business.  They have 4 children and 11 grandchildren.
